Two More Closures

A reader reports that World Cup Coffee in the Ecotrust Building has closed. No more information. Willamette Week reports Banh Cuon Tan Dinh, a Vietnamese restaurant on 82nd next to Fubonn has also closed it’s doors.

I know one of the managers at World Cup, he confirmed that the Ecotrust location closed in a hurry, they only had like 1 day of advance notice. The windows are papered up and signs say that Laughing Planet will be opening up in the space in December.

  2. In an ideal world, there’d be a World Cup AND a Laughing Planet right down the street. Sadness.

In my ideal world, Laughing Planet would be relegated to Mars.

Sadness regarding Banh Cuon. . .a Viet fave.

1 day notice to vacate a restaurant space with a multi-year lease? come on. they’ve been shopping that space most of 2008 looking for a new tenant. maybe the manager was clueless about this, but the powers that be at the world cup headquarters were surely clued in.

You’ve been given some incorrect information. There were signs up on World Cup doors for several weeks announcing their departure (and letting people know where their other locations are). It still may have been a surprise for employees…but it certainly was not a one day notice deal.

  6. cosmos503 says:

yeah, simply not true. most people in the building knew about 2 weeks ahead of time.

You shouldn’t shop with you are hungry and shouldn’t comment at first read. The truth eventually surfaces by yourself or others.

Closing the shop for me was an easy financial decision. How it was going to effect the staff was a different emotion. The Ecotrust management knew we were having issues with that location one year prior to the closure. They turned their back on us. Final decision to close happened three months prior to closure. However, we had to find somebody to lease the space before we could announce to the staff, customers & public that it was a sure thing. That is how this and most leases work.

The manager was notified a month and a half that a new tennant was close to signing. The signature for the new lease happened three weeks prior to closure and after I got off the phone with Ecotrust management I immediatly called the manager for that shop that our last day of business in that location would be Sept. 30th. The second sentence was to “please inform the staff.” Which he did.

In a small business the rumor mill spreads like wild fire. Everybody knew a closure was going to happen but to confirm prior to a signed lease is irresponsible. I was verry gratefull to the staff for staying till the end. Their loyalty to that shop & World Cup will not be forgotten. All were given first rights to new positions within the company. Some traveled, some chose different career…

Please don’t hesitate to call me regarding any question you have regarding the closure of the shop. We didn’t close in a hurry and I would never treat any of my staff memebers in that manner!

Thanks for the kind words. We continue to provide and deliver with great success at many other venues.

My contact info is linked above. If anybody has any questions send them my way. Until then. I just cupped a great Kenya. I’m expecting great things from East African coffees. Look for them where ever you shop. Colombian COE is going on right now. Gotta Go.
