The menu for Blueplate this week is Back to School Specials. Reading it, propelled me back to elementary school, but I have a feeling this food is going to be a lot better than the fare my school cafeteria offered. More expensive yes, – lunch for me was .55 a day. Who’s going with me?
Once mom figured out I was spending all my lunch money on candy from the Helms Man before I got to school, she started packing my Roy Rogers lunchbox almost every day (wish I still had it!), complete with a little note along the lines of “We are so proud of you!”, and more unusual things like Viennese sausages, wedges of paté, and various delicacies left over from the night before. It’s amazing I didn’t get beaten up.

Oh man. I haven’t had a sloppy joe and mashed potatoes in forever. Throw in some canned green beans and a carton of milk, and I’m in 5th grade heaven.
Funny thing about your story is I just told a friend of mine over the weekend that I used to do the same thing – kept my $1.00 of lunch money until my Mom figured it out. Unfortunately, her version of reality was that once caught, I was on my own for lunch – no buck, just some bologna, bread, and mustard.
Speaking of which, maybe BluePlate should come offer up fried bologna sandwiches!
Thanks FD – keep up the good work!
I’ll go! For the honeydew soda and caramel apple milkshakes no doubt!
