Sahagún Chocolates Closes Retail Shop

One of my favorite secret places in Portland is closing up shop. Sahagún was on my must go list for out-of-town visitors, as well as an oasis for me after a particularly lousy day. Unfortunately, after tomorrow, Sahagún Chocolate Shop will be closing permanently, as Elizabeth Montes (interview here), is going to concentrate her efforts on wholesale clients.

From Elizabeth, “Thank you to all you who ever came to Sahagún, I love you”.

You will still be able to find her chocolates around town, as well as through mail order on her website:

Cacao
Cheese Bar
Extracto
The Meadow
Ristretto Roasters
Water Avenue Coffee

I wish her good luck with her new focus

I think you may have hit the nail on the head with your descriptor of “secret”. It seems only the food-wise knew of this place, hence it’s unsustainability as a retail shop.

nooooooo! i loved their sodas! you can’t get them wholesale!

  3. Elizabeth, I loved your shop so much: preposterously small in physical size and wondrously grand in culinary ambition! I still remember the first time I went there–ate four chocolates right at the counter, just stood there, mute, blown away. Thank God I later did get up the courage to meet you! With the closing of your shop Portland has lost one of its crow jewels. I hope all of us at The Meadow can continue to support you by carrying your chocolates in our store, and through our outspoken belief in your chocolate-making genius. XOXO

    Where was her shop?!

Right around 16th and W. Burnside. Just past the 405, and in a pretty busy area so once you realize where you are, you’re past it. Tucked around the right corner, so you could only see it it you knew what you were looking for. Maybe 5 people could sit in there if they were not averse to rubbing shoulders. Next to no foot traffic. I will truly miss the hot chocolate, which was a divine gift.

I’m in mourning. In the summer were the sodas – espresso, lime, “love soda”. Also iced cocoa and iced chocolate. And the ice creams were heavenly. And of course, oh yes, the best hot chocolate I’ve ever had. I’ll miss Elizabeth herself, too.
So while I’m glad the product will live on in stores around town, I’ll really miss the shop. Yeah, it was a sucky location where most of the foot traffic were winos shopping at the corner store and then drinking in front of Sahagun. Charming.

one of the first stops I made on my first trip to PDX. I found it, just sad more of your PDX’ers didn’t.

I drive past there every day and I never knew it was there. I always wondered where that store was. No it’s too late. :(
