Chris Israel Annouces Gruner Restaurant

The Oregonian reports that Chris Israel of 23Hoyt, Saucebox, Zefiro fame is going to open Gruner,  an “Alpine Themed Restaurant at SW 12th and Alder.

Gruner will explore cooking of Northern Italy, France and Central Europe — Germany, Austria, Hungary and The Alps. From a peek at an early menu, think fundutas and strudels and spätzle; rye bread, sweet-spicy mustards, braised sauerkraut; German beers, Belgian ales and plenty of Gruner Veltliner and Pinot Blanc.

Ok, maybe it took a while, but you heard it here first…. in 2007! Glad he’s finally doing it; I’m excited!

Chef Anthony has been doing a helluva job @ Tabla since taking over earlier this year (March or April I believe). I had the pleasure of reviewing this place for the 2009 Diner and loved the meals I got to try on the paper’s nickel – and a couple of others on my own. It’s always nice to run into Anthony on Saturday mornings at the PSU farmers market. Big talent as I’m sure your review will note.

I have been going to Tabla for a while now, and the food, service and ambiance have always been superlative. This place is a little gem. I dined there a week ago with some foodie friends from the Bay Area and we all raved about the taste, quality and presentation. It has always been as good and I did not know there was a new Chef. I was so impressed that I emailed the GM complimenting them; I have never been moved to do this before. Oh – did I mention the incredibly reasonable price? I don’t think I will do that as everyone will want to go !!!

Please, Tabla, don’t change a thing! You are perfect.

The big question to me is…will this be a Carey-free enterprise?

  4. matt says:

This is 100% a Carey-free enterprise. THANK GOD!
