More sweet treats coming to the Pearl. Pop Culture Frozen Yogurt indicates they are opening mid-January at NW 10th and Lovejoy.

Bluefin Sushi has an ‘opening soon’ sign up on the corner of NE Broadway and 42nd Ave. Bluefin sushi? Either they don’t care, it was named in irony, or someone forgot to tell them bluefin tuna is on the endangered fish watch list…

Long awaited fancy-as-all-get-out Lucier is starting to hire so it looks like after over a year of planning they really are close to opening. We noticed they are hiring several positions, including a pastry chef paying in the $40-50K range. Hmm, it’s nice to see this kind of restaurant seeking local talent (a gripe we’ve heard some local chefs state restaurants in town don’t always do), but listing a salary for this type of restaurant and position on a Craigslist ad stikes me as a bit amateurish. Any thoughts?

Hopworks Urban Brewery, and organic brewery and pub will be opening at 2994 SE Powell.

Duffer’s Pub is a new bar opening on NE 42nd close to Killingsworth.

Starbucks Fires CEO, brings back Schultz
In case you’ve had your head buried in an extra grande frappuccino, Starbucks, whose stock pummeled 50% last year, is making some pretty big changes. Mainly they are bringing back Howard Schultz (the board chair and previous CEO from 1987), is considering pairing back some of their food offerings like their breakfast sandwiches and panini and most noteworthy, “possibly closing some under performing stores.” You’ll remember Schultz wrote that now infamous internal memo that was leaked all over the internet that railed against the direction Starbucks has taken in recent years. You can listen to NPR’s coverage on this breaking news here, while we prefer to get our Starbucks news gossip straight from the source.

Breaking News! New York Times does NOT mention Portland!
Ok, I think more than a few of you are a little sick of the Portland food hype found recently in the NY Times, but still. How can this article mention so many hand crafted beers and not mention the brewers scene in Portland (or at least Oregon)?

Finally, new food carts keep opening up as well. There will be a new Belgian Frites stand opening on SE 12th and Hawthorne, while Asian Station, a new pan-Asian cart serving things like noodles, the wonderful Malaysian flatbread known as roti, Chinese dumplings and the like, is now open at SW 10th and Washington. A new Flavorspot location has opened on NE Mississippi, making stoners everywhere rejoice. I had a terrific artisan pizza at the wonderful al Forno Ferruzza cart on SW 4th and Hall. Now all Portland needs is a real authentic Fish and Chips wagon. Any ex-pat Brits out there open for the challenge?

Huh. Starbuck’s breakfast sandwiches weren’t bad – certainly no worse than the McD’s equivalents, and they filled what I considered a useful niche in the “grab coffee & food in the AM” routine.

I don’t know about the Paninis though. They’ve never struck me as a lunch destination.

  2. More Oregon news:

I was just informed that Gourmet has a big spread on the Willamette Valley this month. Haven’t seen it myself yet though.

If the Bluefin Sushi that’s opening on NE Broadway is related to the Bluefin Sushi near PSU, then I would highly encourage people not to go. This is quite possibly the worst sushi in the city. Fred Meyer is leaps and bounds ahead of this.

Also, regardsing Hopworks Urban Brewery (HUB), it’s my opinion that the opening will be later rather than sooner. More info here: http://blog.oregonlive.com/thebeerhere/2008/01/hopworks_urban_brewery_slated.html

Regarding the NY Times and their last of mentioning Oregon when discussing extreme beers: When it comes to beer and spirits Asimov only reviews that which is widely available (and avaiable in NY). Of the true micros in Portland, the only one getting that kind of distribution is Rogue, and usually only the Dead Guy or the special Morimoto beers (neither of which is very hoppy). To be sure he is very aware of the Potrland beer scene, however, the Portland beer scene is just that…in Portland. Of the beers that hen mentions here, two are from CA and enjoy wide distribution, two are from CO, home of the GABF and the rest are from the East Coast. The other thing to consider is that all of these are bottled. Many of our imperial IPAs are on tap on and are often seasonal. The only thing I disagree with in the article is giving the Hercules two stars. That is an excellent beer! Worth three IMO.

It does cost 25 bucks to post an employment classified on portland craigslist now. It’s not totally low rent.

I think that all employment listings should show the salary range. That way neither side wastes each other’s time going through the whole resume/interview process only to find out that the business can’t meet your salary needs. I think that it should be mandatory!

Re: Bluefin Sushi in NE- I called the one in SW (I have never been but heard it’s pretty bad) and they are NOT affiliated w/ the NE location. I may have to try it but sushi is one of those things that I am hesitant to be the first to try- bad sushi is BAD.

What do you think?
