I received this note  today from Bruce Goldberg, owner of Carlyle. The restaurant will be closing on February 14th.

Next month is Carlyle’s seventh anniversary.  February also marks the end of our current  lease.  Both milestones are significant in that they factor into my decision to announce that Carlyle will serve it’s last meal on Sunday, February 14th.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the many loyal customers, employees, and friends who have made Carlyle special. Though saddened by the closing, I ’m comforted by  wonderful memories, ,and the opportunity to have worked with some very talented people.

I hope that over  the next two weeks you’ll make a point of joining us for dinner or a drink. In addition to some recent menu changes,  Chef Martin will be presenting a special prix fixe dinner , offered on both  February 13th and 14th , to celebrate Valentine’s Day, and to serve as our farewell.

On a personal note, my heartfelt thanks to Carlyle’s  past and current staff, some of which have been with us from the beginning. Their talent, dedication, and humor has made for a rich and rewarding experience for which I will always be grateful. I would also like to acknowledge the many local vendors who’s fine products and excellent  service have become synonymous with a raised bar in Portland dining.

Lastly, I’d like to extend an invitation to all former Carlyle employees to join us for a drink (or two) at 10:00 pm on the 14th. I look forward to seeing you.

Thank you for seven years.

Sincerely,

Bruce Goldberg,

Carlyle

Carlyle, so many fond memories. I will miss Carlyle. I will miss dining there with the terrific staff. I will miss the food that under all chefs was always very wonderful and at times truly exceptional. I will miss stopping by the bar and seeing Bruce for a drink and conversation. I will miss the kind concern that Michael gave to the place, always the compassionate and thoughtful host. Bruce Goldberg and all the staff of Carlyle past and present, thanks for everything, the memories will be cherished.

so where are the snarky comments about the “food apocalypse”, food dude?

i salivate at the prospect of libtard restaurateurs getting their asses handed to them in 2010. the ululations of trustafarian gourmands will be like music to my ears!

Agreed. Must be difficult to go through life so bitter, that you have to project your failures onto everyone else to make yourself feel better.

WOW!! Who is that crazy person and I too would like to know what a libtard is. And by the way we are not all trustafarians (rich young people living the bohemian lifestyle in non affluent neighborhoods) ululating (howling) as you seem to presume.

Namaste? Really? Bummer being you. Go take a yoga class man!

These are indeed hard times for the food and beverage industry. Sorry for the Carlyle gang.

Guessing it means “retarded liberal”. I’ll bet that Rahm Emanuel uses it.

Found the definition of Libtard…. and of all places, I found it on Urbandictionary.com. Yep you were right. It means “Liberal Retard”. And I’ll keep the rest of my comments to myself.
