It doesn’t take long to realize the successful chefs and bartenders in this town are a part of a small, tight family. And Kevin Ludwig is definitely an important member. The Portland transplant has been here since 1993 and has strained martinis all over Puddletown’s finest dining rooms (Wildwood, Park Kitchen, Paley’s Place, Clyde Common). Now he’s about to make his dreams come true by opening the doors

Not much in the way of news this week, but since I’m way behind on everything else, here you go:

Cha Cha Cha will be going in next to Ristretto Roasters and EaT on NE Williams. Not exactly the food force that the developer had invisioned, but in this economy one can’t be too picky.

Beaker & Flask is finally making progress. The windows are in, and an opening is in sight

In January, I reviewed Q Tonic. Now Fever-Tree, another gourmet version has hit local store shelves. I thought it was time to go back and update this post with a comparison between the two.

Let me start by saying this: I don’t know a lot about coffee. At least, not anymore. Prior to jumping on the United States Barista Championship bandwagon, I surely thought I did. Yah, I drink it every day, have worked in a few coffee shops, go absolutely bananas if I have a good latte, but then I heard competitor Renee

This guide was originally written for the 2009 United States Barista Championship, but it got so much favorable press, I decided to adapt it to anyone dining on a budget. This is a quick guide to places that are very reasonably priced, and close to the Convention Center/Downtown core.

If it’s lunch or breakfast you are after, Portland abounds with great options. Lately two new places have been getting a ton of attention: Bunk Sandwiches and Meat Cheese Bread. They both are terrific, and you’ll get out the door for less than ten dollars – much less at breakfast.
