From the newest Simpatica letter: …remember how I told you a month or two ago that the new project will include a butcher shop in a restaurant? Well, as of Thursday, January 1st, Viande Meats & Sausage will no longer be located inside City Market. It will be… nowhere. We will be relocating to the new digs, but it’s going

From their blog: Yesterday we heard from our attorneys that the Federal Trade Commission ruled that we have to turn our confidential internal financial, marketing and planning information over to Whole Foods Market. Here’s a link to the ruling. We disagree with and are disappointed in this decision. We’re huddling with the lawyers to figure out what our next step

The Paley’s Place Cookbook Hits Store Shelves

There are only a few “celebrity” books that I use on a regular basis: Bouchon, by Thomas Keller, Mustard’s Grill Napa Valley Cookbook, by Cindy Pawlcyn, and a few of the books by Alice Waters of Chez Panise fame. Otherwise, I tend to stick with compilations. The point is, most of this type of cookbooks are just recycled recipes, or so complex I don’t want to bother with them. However, The Paley’s Place Cookbook: Recipes and Stories from the Pacific Northwest, is one that I am likely to keep close

#1. I have helped lots of people with frozen parking brakes this week. More cold is coming. For those of you who are not used to cold weather, DO NOT set your parking brake when you park. It will freeze to the drum, and cause you lots of grief the next day. A hair dryer will not be enough to

A new coffeehouse is to open in the space last occupied by Acorn, or before that, Little Wing Cafe. Why is this news? Because it is owned by Billy Wilson, formerly of Albina Press, currently of Coffeehouse NW. Billy is known for having a large following of coffee aficionados, and for winning the NW Barista Competition. It will be called Barista.
Lucier R.I.P.? That’s the rumor. I don’t normally post these things until the doors are locked, but I’ve been deluged with reports that they will close their doors on Saturday night.
Review: Bunk Sandwiches

What I like most about Bunk is, though it has only been open for a few weeks, it’s already a dive. Sit in the back next to the stacks of bread, and you’ll know what I mean. It’s like being transported to the East Coast, where sandwich shops are a dime a dozen. The only difference is, this one is clean and the sandwiches are damn good.
Bunk was opened in late November 2008 by Tommy Habetz, last from Meriwethers, previously of Ripe. When I asked him how he came
The Oregonian Savages Lucier with a C- Rating

This is only news because Lucier tries so hard to be perfect, and because they try so hard, fall so short. After all the pre-publicity and self-aggrandizing, the oncoming crash of this restaurant is as loud as a jet.
I haven’t had many complimentary things to say about their food, Willamette Week wasn’t particularly nice, calling it The Trophy Wife, but Karen Brooks has destroyed them with her well written review.
