Dear Coffeehouse Northwest,

Words can not express my thanks to you today. Many local businesses give so much to their customers and to their communities throughout the year, and to charities during the holiday season. Yet today, you went way above and beyond the call of duty, and I want you to know that your generosity has not gone unnoticed.

I personally have so many things to be thankful for, including terrific friends, no worries for heat, health or good food, and a family that may not be perfect but loves each other fiercely. Those are the important things in life and I don’t take them for granted.

Today, many of us reflect on our blessings and on our losses. Like you, I find it is important to remember the less fortunate among us; the injured, the sad, the struggling, and the ones who may not have the things I have been so lucky to have in my life.

As someone who lives quite far from her family, I know how the holidays can sometimes be lonely. Despite a strong group of friends, I too have been stuck on the holidays, feeling a bit like an orphan.

So thank you. Thank you for being open today and for providing a cozy and friendly space for a cup of coffee and a pastry. Thank you for serving up everything (yes readers, they gave away everything) for free today, and instead using the tips you received towards charity. And thank you for opening back up this evening and throwing a free dinner and party for anyone who may have spent the holidays alone instead.

Yours in Spirit and Goodwill,

Cuisine Bonne Femme and the Crew at Portland Food and Drink

Cuisine Bonne Femme takes her name from the types of food she likes to cook the most; simple dishes based on the freshest ingredients and gently coaxed to bring out their best qualities. Things like roast chicken with crackling skin, meat stews, all kinds of soups, and anything on toast. You know, peasant food like your French/Southern/Thai/Lebanese Mother might make. In her past she held many a food service job, from a high-end traditional Japanese restaurant to a grease-pit diner off of Interstate 5. And she claims to still have nasty case of espresso wrist from the 10 billion lattes she made during her barista years. CBF has an educational background that includes food sciences and politics, and has been a past writer for both cultural and academic publications. She takes a big picture view of the role that all things gastronomic are having in shaping the economy, culture, identity, and ever changing food scene both here and elsewhere. She believes Portland is at a pivotal and creative time food wise, and is constantly amazed and surprised at the bounty our city has to offer.

We have been much encouraged by everyone who was able to make it by this year, and are deeply thankful to contribute in some way to such an excellent holiday.

Thanks to everyone who helped make the day a success, and thanks even to everyone else.

I second the accolades of CBF. It’s one thing to make the absolute best espresso and espresso drinks in Portland (along with Albina Press), but it’s another to happily give them away on Thanksgiving. These guys are great, and that new paint job is smashing.
